Throughout history, people have come together to make their voices heard, joining with others to generate collective power. There are many ways to get involved in creating just, vibrant and healthy communities. Connecting with a local community-organizing group is one way to get involved.
Community organizing involves the development of leadership skills among everyday members of a community, the formation of coalitions between different factions or segments of that community, and the creation of opportunities for individual and coalition members of the community to make their views and concerns known to those in positions of power.
Throughout the foreclosure crisis, several groups have distinguished themselves as particularly effective vehicles for collective action. The following three groups are statewide but each has either a local office or local partners.
- Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) joins together its thousands of members across 11 counties, creating change by helping ordinary citizens to organize and take action. ACCE creates opportunities for community members to prevent foreclosures and to demand that lenders give people meaningful opportunities to save their homes. To get involved, go to ACCE Statewide or email email@example.com.
- The California Reinvestment Coalition (CRC) is made of more than 300 non-profit organizations working to increase fair and equal access to credit and to support the economic vitality of low-income communities and communities of color. CRC uses a variety of strategies, including direct meetings with bank executives, negotiation with banks in relation to their responsibilities under the Community Reinvestment Act, and support for policies that regulate bank activities and protect consumers from unscrupulous lending and predatory financial products and services. To learn more, see CRC Reports, Issues and Newsroom.
- Tenants Together is dedicated to defending and advancing the rights of California tenants to safe, decent and affordable housing. As California’s only statewide renters' rights organization, Tenants Together works to improve the lives of California’s tenants through education, organizing and advocacy. Tenants Together was the driving force behind California’s Protecting Tenants in Foreclosure Law and runs a statewide Tenant Rights Hotline at (888) 495-8020.
